Movie Review – I love you Phillip Morris

Those of you who are Jim Carrey fans, hands up!

Those of you who are not.. erm, maybe this show isn’t for you.

Me, I LOVE Jim Carrey!

I found him hilarious in the borderline psychotic rubber-faced goofball who made Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber and The Mask but just so-so in The Truman Show. However, he was truly great in Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! The other straight comedy role he did that I liked was Bruce Almighty (though many beg to differ). Like I said, either you are a fan, or not.

The Plot : This show is about one Steven Russell (Carrey) who is happily married to Debbie, and who is a member of the local police force when a car accident provokes a dramatic reassessment of his life.

Steven realizes he’s gay.

He then decides to live life to the fullest – even if it means breaking the law. Steven’s new, extravagant lifestyle involves cons and fraud and, eventually, a stay in the State Penitentiary where he meets sensitive, soft-spoken Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts Steven to attempt and often succeed at one impossible con after another.

What I liked about the show : Jim Carrey of course! Though in real life he is straight, his outlandish over the top acting actually sold his role as the gay “con-man”. He was at his sincerest, playing a completely insincere person. When he apologized for messing up, you really felt sorry for him. He did not act like a man in love. He WAS a man in love. Steven Russell final prank IS the MOTHER of all cons.

What I hated about the show: Ewan McGregor’s acting! Casting Ewan McGregor as the titular love of Steven’s life was just wrong. With bleached blond hair, exaggeratedly camp mannerisms and another of his patently awful approximations of an American accent, he was totally NOT believable in his ultra sensitive lover’s role.

As a result, every time he’s on screen he kills the comedy momentum! Arrgh cringe!

What I found amusing about the show: The two of them, they kiss , a lot (amongst other things.. ahem!)

What I learnt about the show: This show has absolutely nothing to do with cigarettes whatsoever.

Warning: Some mainstream moviegoers may find the film’s plot, sex scenes and unapologetically gay sensibility off-putting. While the movie doesn’t feature full-frontal male nudity, it does show suggestive fruit arrangements, cloud formations and pencil drawings. There are no shortage of penis drawings nor suggestive oral-sex scenes in this movie either, so there you go.. you have been warned!
