UMAC Banana Leaf Rice

We’ve driven past this Banana Leaf rice place many times, along Jalan University, and @tummyleejones always says we need to check it out.

So finally, after a series of bends and turns through the housing area, we find it.

University of Malaya Academic Club or UMAC is what the name says it is. A club house for the good folk of University Malaya to hang out at. And now, thanks to a banana leaf restaurant that has set up shop there, the clubhouse is opened to the public.

The place is lovely. Looks more like someone’s house rather than restaurant.

Shady trees and a long driveway leading into a bungalow house makes you feel most relaxed and at ease.

There’s al fresco sitting as well as indoor dining.

Priced at only RM5, you get 5 vegetarian side dishes, and as many refills of it and rice as you like. You also get one cup of rasem with it.

What I like about it is that the food tastes good, and isn’t too oily or salty. The  food is served on a banana leaf with an assortment of freeflow vegetables, chutney, pickles & papadum. Rasem here is not the best – I have had better, but acceptable. Definitely cuts grease if you’re having mutton or the heavier meats.

Add on mutton varuval for a better experience!

They serve you a bit of kesari as well which is sweet and made from semolina. It’s for dessert I suppose, but I like eating it with my savory side dishes;)

Fried fish and chicken are good options too.

UMAC is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week, and only lunch on Sundays.
