There are, unfortunately, a few meals I wish I could have skipped, this year, i.e. the joyless plates slapped together by cynical or lackadaisical kitchens. But such unhappy memories have a way of vanishing (kind of like how one puts lacquer over a scratched parquet tile to make it looks spanking new) when one recalls the restaurants that set themselves apart by their pursuit of new varieties of deliciousness. Gastro Sentral is one such place.
foie gras burger.. in the pursuit of new varieties of deliciousness
Gastro Sentral, located on the ground floor, of Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur, is modern, swanky, yet laid back in design. I love the mix of leather furniture with shiny, reflective, metallic drapes that tells you the place doesn’t take itself too seriously. The show kitchen is cool, where the culinary brigade entertains guests with their cooking flair through a wide glass panel.
So, what should one eat, at Gastro Sentral?
The choices are huge as they are varied. But here’s what we had for lunch one sunny Sunday afternoon..
The Foie gras Burger (RM52 nett) was simply delicious. Not as heavy as it sounds, this tasty snack is made up with, two generous slices of Foie gras served with Frisse and Pine Nut dressing, Apple slaw, Pomegranate Molasses and Candied Kumquats. Such crazy, intense decadence is each bite – tasty as hell.
Long a staple of the kids menu, the mac and cheese has certainly grown up, thanks to elegant ingredients like lobster, or duck etc being added to it. But this comfort food is not always well executed. At Gastro Sentral, it fortunately is so good, it will have you quaking at the knees.
This Lobster Mac & Cheese (RM42 nett) version, is a seriously creamy & cheesy macaroni loaded with lobster and truffle oil, topped with more cheese, pepper and breadcrumbs for good measure! 100% comfort food .. mega addictive!
Here’s a healthy dish that won’t go straight to your waist – the Herb Poached Cod (RM62 nett).. Minted Mash pumpkin, soba noodle and enoki in miso broth.. super healthy but not compromising on flavour.
And a great choice for burger lovers, is the Burger @ Sentral (RM39) – Kill cow. Eat cow. We KL-ites are obsessed with the hamburger. Lettuce and tomato. Pickles and mustard. Medium rare for taste; well done for health. However you might like yours, if you’re here, you’re eating one. This burger happened to be chunky, moist and juicy and made with 220g/8oz Black Angus, charcoal grilled and topped with Monterey Jack cheese and Chipotle aioli. The sides of Pear-celery, Jalapeno and Wedges were fantastic too.
More for the meat eaters.. don’t forget to try the 22-hours Braised Wagyu Cheek (RM58 nett) – Creamy mashed potato, Toasted Baguette grilled Green Asparagus, Béarnaise sauce. It would be a small miracle, if you didn’t need to see a cardiac surgeon after this one.
And if you’re really not that hungry, the selection of tapas at Gastro Sentral might be a good idea.
Lamb varuval, steam “man tau” bun (RM15 nett)
food coma after this.. for sure!
perfectly poached eggs benedict and salmon.. anytime is a good time, for perfectly poached eggs!
Beef end cut, garlic, black pepper and sea salt (RM15 nett)
The Ultimate Lobster Timbale with Avocado – made from Avocado, Lobster medallions, Diced tomato, Celery, Apple remoulade, Sour cream, Salmon roe and Roasted curry powder, this was the bomb!
Finally, lunch that almost extends to dinner, is over. But not before we have some sweets. And oh, deserts was a super sweet and rich affair…
Here is Eton Mess 1930’s – The story of the Great Accidental Desserts (RM20 nett) – Crushed meringues, fresh chopped strawberries and whipped cream as well as Aunt Margaret’s Famous butterscotch cheesecake (RM33 nett) – With graham cracker crust and 4 different toppings… definitely big enough to share!
