What do you want in a brunch? Strong coffee, some bubbly, no line or queue for your food, and enough choices to satisfy your Angus-lovin’ brother and your Vegan aunt?
And it’s no wonder that some folks don’t like brunch. First there’s the two-hour wait. Then you get seated, but since the place is so packed, service is horrendous. People are snapping pictures of eggs for their Facebook and Instagram feeds and when your food finally arrives, it’s cold. Yes brunch can be a monstrous meal, but if done the right way, it can also be enjoyable and relaxing.
A quick intro by Chef Samuele Alvisi with regards to Branzo, and we are on our way..
The trick is to pick a good restaurant, and one that serves piping hot food, to your table, ala carte style (though it is a buffet). Well have no fear folks, the Branzo Brunch is back. A revamped version of the Bubbalicious brunches that Prego used to have, this eat as much as you can buffet, is classy and calls for no queuing.
Prego has moved away from the traditional buffet brunch and made it easier to relax and indulge, with wines and champagne, as their chefs deliver freshly made Italian favourites to your table. Branzo was derived from the word ‘Pranzo’, meaning a traditional Italian lunch. They then added some breakfast elements to create ‘Branzo’! How cute.. love the name, and love the fact that I can eat as much as I want, without moving and inch from my seat! Most of the dishes are for sharing, and really, it was just sufficient for both me and Cumi to devour.
service to your table, and with a smile too
First up, we have a selection of assorted platter with gratin of scallop, fried calamari, eggplant parmigiana, caprese caesar salad, prawn, breakfast eggs different style and garlic and rosemary foccacia.
You can have eggs till it’s coming our of your ears.. or till you wanna cry egg-cellent!
scallops – the bomb! These were my favourite.
Branzo, a great event for families.. and Prego is definitely child friendly
One of the nicest tomato salsa dips we have had in a long time. Beware you end up eating too much bread with this:P
Then came the Pasta & Zuppa course right to our table. We were served a soup of mini chicken ravioli in chicken broth, spaghetti with clams, beef lasagna, and casarecce with lamb. Loved the pasta dishes. The Vongole and the Lamb pasta really stole the show.
Brunch isn’t complete without champagne
terrific spaghetti with clams – loved the spiciness due to added chilies
Casarecce with lamb – a small yet rich serving of casarecce pasta with braised lamb ragu.. this was insanely delicious.
lasagna – hearty and cheesy.. just a tasting portion otherwise it would have been too much – this was all before even the mains were served
pizzas were generously passed around during lunch – freshly made wood fired oven pizzas.. worth salivating over. The Lamb pizza was a little salty but the chewy thin crust was nice.
Then it was time for the mains.. enter the Arrosti and contorni – Prego’s slow roasted lamb leg, fresh water prawns, baked fresh seasonal fish, Australian Angus Sirloin, Spring Chicken served with potato chips and sauce on the side.
Would have preferred my lamb and steak medium rare – these were too dry
truffle, mushroom risotto.. again just a small serving of this rich risotto was enough to knock your socks off. Loved the heavy, meaty truffle aroma.
So, if all that was not enough for you, you are more than welcome to repeat the orders, Chef Samuele Alvisi tells me. Err.. I think definitely enough for us!
Before concluding brunch, we had the Piatto di dolciumi – walnut cheese brownie, raspberry and yoghurt cheese cake, fluffy italian cream horn, strawberry mascarpone tart and tiramisu … too many nice things on one plate. My favourite is always the fluffy italian cream horn, and Cumi likes everything else! We make a good pair finishing up the desserts.
hmm… I never quite know, which end to start eating this from:P
No end in sight! After dessert, make sure you keep some space for the Formaggio – Italian cheese, homemade jam, and breads, served on a wooden board, at your table.
Oh.. my bursting stomach! Branzo Brunch is definitely value for money.
