The Red Bean Bag

Over the last two years, more than a dozen of new cafes and coffee bars have sprung up all over Kuala Lumpur, representing a small dedicated group of establishments, where coffee making is treated like an art, or at least a high form of craft. The Red Bean Bag being one of them.

For years Malaysians had to look to places like the Coffee Bean or Starbucks for a passable quality of coffee. Today, we have all these lovely, quirky independent cafes to chose from, and you know, the difference between a cup of coffee from these new style coffee bars and what was available before, is striking.

clouds in your coffee.. a fine art, no doubt

The elaborate designs in the cappuccino’s foam at The Red Bean Bag aren’t just to show off, but are a sign that the barista properly steamed the milk so that it holds its form. The owners themselves Kate and Yew Kheong knew the importance of good coffee and they actually went through basic barista training in Australia to learn the skills for themselves, before starting up Red Bean Bag. Apart from great coffee, this is also a cosy place to indulge in that nice and greasy Aussie big breakfast. Up till a month ago, the Red Bean bag was having this wonderful 50% off your breakfast promotion, but unfortunately that’s over now. Me and my mates used to pig out here on the Big Breakfast, for an affordable RM10 only, fruit juice included .. imagine that! The French Toast set worked out to be around RM8.. We had to watch ourselves (and thank God the promo is over) or we would soon end up a little rounder around the edges.. and we can’t have that, now can we..

French Toast

This fabulous version of the classic French comes complete with caramelized sliced bananas and strawberries, as well as a small pot of maple syrup to drizzle over your toast. The toast itself is amazing because it comes coated in crunchy almond shavings, held together the conventional way – with egg. Add a dollop of butter to the hot slice of french toast and thank your lucky stars that later, you have a gym to go to, to work it all off. Ha..

Eggs Benedict – runny, creamy.. divine!

Whenever I’m in need of a quick post-hangover pick-me-up, I line up on Saturday mornings with the rest of the bleary-eyed hipsters at the Red Beanbag, for a taste of the weekend eggs menu, specifically the decadent eggs-Benedict, which is constructed with two perfectly orange, perfectly runny eggs topped with creamy, rich and fattening (who cares) hollandaise sauce.
