If girls are made of Sugar and Spice and all things nice, then this lady here must be the sweetest girl in town! I am talking about, none other than the Sugar queen herself, Ms Anna Olson.
Born 1968 in Atlanta, Georgia, Anna is a professionally trained pastry chef and she currently resides in the city of Welland, Ontario in the Niagara region of Ontario. If you think the name rings a bell, that is because she is famous for being the host of Fresh with Anna Olson on Food Network Canada and of course, every Malaysian should know her other programme, Sugar with Anna Olson on AFC.
Anna was in Malaysia for a short period and we managed to catch her at the Astro organized event at Electrolux, Kota Damansara, where we got to watch her live, baking a fantastic, super-addictive, super-sweet (of course!) banana caramel cheesecake.
Since images speak louder than words sometimes, here are some videos of her event. I specifically recorded the interesting bits for you!
Part I Intro Malaysia welcomes Anna Olson
In this video, M.C. Xandria Ooi introduces the Sugar lady herself. Anna talks about her wonderful impression of Malaysia and Malaysian sweets.
Part II Anna Olson’s Big Catastrophy with the Lemon Meringue Pie
In this video, Anna proves that she is human as well (no!) and makes mistakes just like us regular folk. She talks about experimenting and how it is her job to make sure that the recipe is just right, so that people out there do not need to go through the trail and error of baking before coming up with the perfect formulae.
Part III Anna Olson Loves Durian
In this video, Anna talks about her encounters with the King of Fruits. Apparently she loves it (which means, she is quite possibly, more Malaysian than me!)
Part IV Anna Olson how to caramelize sugar
In this video Anna give some interesting tips on how to keep your sugar from crystallizing, when you are making caramel.
Part V Anna Olson on why she gave quit her job to bake
In this video, Anna answers the million dollar question. “Why on earth did you give up your career, to bake?”
Part VI The final product – banana caramel cheesecake
In this video.. TA-DAH! the final product!
More photos at the event.
A big thank you to Electrolux for hosting such a fun, educational and entertaining event.

This is another event apart from the Meridien one? Argh!!!
Three all in all, darling
I still can’t get over the fact that she loves durian. I lub that she lubs liu-lian! 😀
hahahaha 😛 I told you she is more Malaysian than i am!!!
Wowzer! I’m so happy that a Mat Salleh from my 2nd home loves durian! Salute 🙂
woohoo!
She’s cool! I actually hadn’t heard of her before (she seems like more of a Canadian than US celebrity) but she sure makes a mean cheesecake. That looks delicious!
but she’s on all the American channels as well!
Although I think the cake looks awesome and it surely has to be delicious, I’m admiring the hosts extremely peculiar haircut.
?
Before I left to travel I worked at an aad agency and at one point Food Network Canada was our client.
I met Anna on a photo shoot and it was a long one where we all sat around for a long time waiting. I have to say she is one of the nicest hosts I have ever met. Really down to earth and was so patient when many things went wrong and the shoot took much longer than expected.
Lovely person indeed.
