All this marathon training and running has only succeeded in doing one thing.
It has given me a huge appetite for carbs. And few foods exert as tantalizing a pull on my voracious appetite as rice and chicken.
Not just any chicken. But good old fashioned, texture that has a bit of a fight, kampung chicken or “choy yin gai”.
And you know, as with so many other street food favorites, each and every one of us defines what makes a good plate of chicken rice, differently. While a bowl of kick-ass oily rice works for some, others may kill for super silky smooth poached chicken skin, or a one-of-its-kind-chili sauce, and some, swear by the yellow skin of the wild, and muscular kampung (village/free range) chicken. I say, whatever rocks your boat, that’s it then.. that’s the perfect plate of Chicken Rice.
Anyway, this place here, Loke Yun, is a bit of an establishment. It’s been around for yonks, and we are happy to report that the chicken is still the bee’s knees.
This is how we like our rice… doused in a generous amount of black sauce. The chicken rice at Loke Yun is super oily and fragrant, almost slightly salty. You can tell that a lot of chicken fat has been rendered into it. If you stop to think about it a wee bit more, what they have done with the rice, and the fat content in it, you might not even want to eat it. But you know, one bite and all that resolve is out the door. It’s so bloody tasty.
Something else I find irresistible. A greasy plate of chicken intestine and gizzards. All that crunch in one bite of intestine, the secret must be in the way they clean and boil it. It is just so insanely good, when accompanied by that equally fatty chicken rice.
Cleave it, serve it .. service here is pretty prompt and we waited only 15 minutes for our food
Perfectly fried shallots that are crispy & brown but unburnt, soy sauce, shallot oil, and some sesame oil. Can’t seem to find anything I don’t like about the chicken they serve here.
Loads of kick in the chili sauce, and a nice sour sharp aftertaste, before the burn hits your tongue and upper palate. This great mix of flavours can only be further heightened by adding the fresh ground ginger to it .
So good you want to holler, ” Kar farn !” (another plate of rice please!)

Wow Sean, you’re hardcore. This rice is slightly sticky- incredibly filling.. so I’d like to see you finish two! LOL. The chicken on the other hand, even I could eat half on my own!
I’ve never really attempted chicken rice, but you’re tempting me with this dish.

A woman after my heart….I larve Intestines and Gizzards as well! I went there recently, only to find out they were closed that day. Had a mediocre meal at the shop next door 🙁
Aiiyah.. must go back then! It’s still so good! I can’t wait to have another round!
The chicken skin is so yellow!
That’s coz it’s the Kampung Chicken – free range has his yellow skin.
You should try the one at Petaling street, the shop next to a pet shop and opposite Haio
That’s the best chicken rice in town
OK, will do. Thanks for the heads up!
