Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun – Old Town, PJ : Getting into the ‘Spirit’ of the holiday season…

Ipoh Canning Garden Chee Cheong Fun (CCF) at PJ Old Town!

Hmmmmm… would this CCF pass the test of this Ipoh gal’s tastebuds?

DSC00105

Well, the mushroom sauce with the mince pork is actually rather reminiscent of the Ipoh Canning Garden CCF sauce in texture, but in taste, the mushroom was too overwhelming and the dark sauce too heavy. Also, the chillie sauce was completely awful with a stale manufactured taste.
No where near Ipoh Canning actually. (I have to say that Ipoh folk all have their own favourites, when it comes to CCF, so let me just clearly say that the Ipoh Canning one is my fav ok? lol…)

The Sar Hor Fun here is pretty good. Light chewy balls in a sweet, lardy soup, with springy noodles. No complaints.

After brunch, seeing as it was a long weekend and all, we thought it might be a good idea to swing by Tong Woh, PJ State, to pick up our wines for the holiday season… Judging from the long snaking queues and the hordes of cars jamming up the small lane, so did half the PJ folk.

Anyway, whilst we were picking out our wines, we noticed something blue-green on the shelves…

What? They sell Absinthe here in Malaysia? Aiyoh, had we known, we wouldn’t have had to ‘tumpang’ our friends coming back from Europe to buy it for us…
The 68% one looked rather hardcore.

Another cool tipple for the new year celebrations… are you intrigued?!

Finally we took our place in the long, long line, at the checkout counter… Good job they give discounts at Tong Woh, because we can feel our wallets getting lighter already and Christmas isn’t even here yet… oo-er.. ;P

    fbb:
yar, price rite..? you are suppose to drip the absinthe over a cube of sugar, collecting the solution at the end and drinking it, to take away the bitter taste.
then wait for the green fairy.. 😛

    jen:

I didn’t realise they sold absinthe in M’sia! Somehow they always remind me of vampires ala Anne Rice or Poppy Z Brite. 😛

  • 550ml jar of faith says:

How absolutely timely! Just when I’ve about resigned myself to substandard CCF, here comes your esteemed recommendation from Ipoh, right here in PJ! And absinthe is legal now?! Jolly Xmas indeed!

  • "Joe" who is constantly craving says:

ohhhh this is where fbb gets his cheap stock of prosecco rite? nxt stop!

  • worldwindows says:

The last I remember Ipoh’s CCF uses light reddish sweet sauce. Remember I first ate KL’s CCF at the old KL Hilton (next door hawkers I meant) in the late 70’s. The brown sauce stuck in the mind. Brown sauce is always associated with KL’s CCF. LOL!

  • vkeong says:

reminds me, i gotta look for a good restaurant to celebrate Christmas cum New Year 😀

  • jason says:

    Er… such bad imitations 😛

  • Lisa says:

Have you tried the Canning Gdn CCF that is sold in SS2 food court? From my recollection of the Ipoh one, it’s pretty close. Lady who runs the stall says she’s the sister-in-law of the Canning Gdn fella. Only thing is that the pickled chilli for the SS2 one has a funny taste.

  • Penang Tua Pui says:

talk about CCF…. my pick will be Teluk Intan… try once… miss them until today…

  • CUMI & CIKI says:

    joe:
yea, that’s the place! buy till u drop!

    ww:
yea, i love that reddish sauce too.. don’t really fancy the brown one

  • CUMI & CIKI says:

    vkeong:
depends on what sorta food you are thinking of for the year end.. so many choices actually!

    jason:
    uh huh

    lisa:
that lady is rubbish too.. the closest to that ipoh canning one, is at that sunken corner coffee shop near the old Jaya supermarket (sec14). That old man and his son – very good!

    PTP:
i have yet to try that one.

  • Julian Si says:

Ipoh made it to PJ, eh… not quite in terms of quality. Alas!!

Hope I get an invite for this wine gig u are planning, hint hint 🙂
