One of the surprising finds this week, would be a cafe called, Merchant’s Lane.
Located along Petaling street, just look out for the narrow door, that leads up to this charming cafe. We almost missed it when we drove past twice, but it is easy enough to spot on foot.
Yes indeed, charming is the best word to describe this oasis of calm, along bustling Petaling Street.
Unsure however, what to expect of the food, we quickly ordered a selection of dishes that caught our eye.
The ‘South China Sea’ (RM24) grilled salmon fillets partnered with runny poached eggs, house-made hash & mango-corn salsa
You’re supposed to mash-up the eggs into the hash till it’s all a sodden mess and eat it with the salsa and salmon all at once. It was really rather good, especially when it was all mixed up like that.
Rose honey milk tea (RM12), superfruit lemon tea (RM13), hot tea
All equally delectable, but the prettiest of these and the most popular would be the rose honey milk tea. It had a lovely, subtle rose fragrance that was just too nice for words.
‘Hongkie Beef Stew’ (RM18), delicious fork tender, slow-cooked for 12 hours beef, & labelled ‘Cantonese-style’ on the menu, mash, gravy & veggies
Deep, flavourful comfort food. Be sure to order this!
‘Italian Chow Mein’ (RM20) – Spaghetti served with Malaysian Rendang – not al dente enough and a little too sweet for our liking. There was a spicy edge to it that was nice.
Better than Sex (RM16) – Pandan Roti Jala, melted cheese, kaya toast ice-cream, drizzled with gula melaka
Well, what can I tell you. It was almost better than sex.. haha! But honestly once of the most delicious desserts we have tried this year. The roasted peanut chips, the heady aroma of gula melaka, the still warm roti jala infused with the scent of pandan.. wow, it all worked harmoniously and climaxed on the tastebuds;)
Merchant’s lane is a gem of a find on Petaling Street. The prices will not really burn a hole in your pocket, but the food is good, and the portions value for money. Go and try it for yourselves and see!

Very charming indeed! Love the place and yes, I do think I can go through that narrow doorway. Hehehehe!!!! Oh my!!! What a thick slab of salmon…and I thought the one I has was thick – tomorrow’s post in my blog. RM24 for that is really cheap…but I’ve my eyes on the beef stew, looks so good!
Beef stew is goooood! LOL
Seeking for parking at this area can be quite hard right?
Oh boy that dessert, has everything I like from the roti jala, cheese to the Gula Melaka!
Evenings are much free-er!
AH! I want to try the food at this place, looks so good and the place look interesting too.
definitely worth a visit! 🙂
That’s a weird name for the salmon dish as you can’t find salmon in south china sea. haha
You have a point there! 😛
The roti jala is definitely enticing! And that name! Heh 😉
“almost”!! hahaha
