Movie Review – Buried

Cumi reviews Buried..

Ryan Reynolds. I have to admit that I like this guy(in a brotherly way) as much as many of the females do (in a non-brotherly way). He’s got an enviously fit physique, dashing good looks, versatile actor, an adventurous mind (apparently he backpacks & rides motorbikes), a marathon runner, seems down to earth and he’s a Canadian! What does his nationality have anything to do with this post? Absolutely nothing. I just ran out of words. Maybe i should add he’s got a sexy wife (to most but not me), Scarlett Johanssen, and his former gal, singer-songwriter, Alanis Morrisette.  What a contrast, but both equally famous.

Lets focus on the versatile actor part. I’ve seen him in a variety of roles; from the party dude in Van Wilder, the terrorized newly wed in Amityville Horror,  being Blade’s ally in Blade: Trinity to his odd invisible friend role in the small budgeted, Paper Man. I like how he injects his own brand of humor in his characters. It’s always fun to watch him and i know when there’s a movie with him casted, it’s going to be entertaining…

So today I’ve just watched Buried, his new movie release and quite possibly a paradigm shift for him. In this movie, there are no sexy women, you don’t get to see his washboard abs, there is no soundtrack, there is no product placements and there are no visual gunfire or car explosions – in fact, there are no cut away shots either. There is solitude drama, claustrophobic scenes and political intrigue. Does this sound appealing to you? Well, I liked the movie.

Brief synopsis… the story is about a US citizen working in Iraq. He is  Paul Conrad. His vehicle gets ambushed. By the time he wakes up, he finds out he is hostage held for ransom and buried in a box.

This is my first Rodrigo Cortes film and the same as well for the writer Chris Sparling. I’m impressed. They captured the claustrophobia and contained the intrigue well. I think i’m going to watch a lot more of them.

If you want to see more of Ryan Reynold’s (and more of his physique), there’s the upcoming, Green Lantern.
