A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a dollar could buy 1,200 calories of potato chips or 875 calories of soda but just 250 calories of vegetables or 170 calories of fresh fruit.

Rising rates of obesity in the United States have been linked to food supply trends and to the growing consumption of energy-dense foods.
More and more Americans are becoming overweight and obese while consuming more added sugars and fats and spending a lower percentage of their disposable income on food. Do you think that as Malaysians (Asians), we are at risk too?

    Slightly Out of Topic, but we pay more for a liter of coke than for a liter of petrol. Yet people don't complain and still guzzle down coke 😉

    i have to say that a starchy carbo load (mamak and also fastfoods!) after a late night's party feels much better than a plate of veges yes. Must be how the lard slows down the absorption of the alcohol in the gut. But then again isn't that indicative of the rise of obesity in asian countries as well.

    op cors we are at risk la. even worse, i think. cos we take coke, chips, santan, sambal, chicken rice, hokkien mee etc at the same time…haha. moderation is the key la, i guess.

    unka… that's why I stopped drinking Coke for the longest time!! the fact that there's 7 tablespoon of sugar in every can of the fizzy drink has put a full stop to it! he he he 😛 actually I still drink once in a blue moon! No other drinks can give me the Aahhhhhhh feeling

    having said that… I've also stopped eating junk food too!! but then looking at the type of other food (oily and in quantity)… it made no difference

    yes,indeed..most of my fren were gaining weight due to this kind of habit…been struggle with weight problem , so kinda aware of fats and carbo ….end up ppl laughing me eating rabbit food..lol..

    Before we throw the baby out with the bathwater, I think that "junk" food has it's place in the variety of stuff we eat. I do not condone it as an EVERYDAY food but still, as a variation from our daily food, it's not a bad thing. The soul needs to be fed too! Furthermore, if you deprive yourself entirely, it could lead to bingeing, which is worse than the occasional indulgence. So there you go. My two cents worth.

    PS I've given up fizzies. Doctor told me 15 years ago it contributes to all sorts of things. Got kidney stones partly cos of them.

    So parents, don't start your kids on them or don't use them as treats either. Teach them to ask for juice or water. And DON'T USE FOOD AS REWARD. Keep judgement out of it and you won't feel deprived. 😉 So no BAD v GOOD. Just EVERYDAY and SOMETIMES. 😉

    Eating trends have changed globally over the years , as we become more civilised and developed ( something like that lah ) & move towards commercialization and convenience, or shall we say towards fast foods aka street food and McDons/KFs, plus buxom beers. Obviously a majority will become obese as the good times come as in thin skinny hungry Communist China of Mao Tse Tung years and where nowadays you see more Shanghai Guilin Harbin fatties. If you hadn't go round running in KL you might be one too ! tho a beautiful one la
