This morning, my husband had a craving. To satisfy this craving, we had to drive towards Zoo Negara…
We saw a sign that said we were on the right track…
When you spot the MacDonalds, and the Petronas sign…
It means you are really near! There it is!
New Heong Kee..
but good Old fashion Beggar’s chicken!
Luckily New Heong Kee is open for lunch too.
A massive longan tree grows in the backyard…
I wonder if longan is for dessert…
Here’s our lunch, being unwrapped.
layer, after layer…
Until our chicken emerges!
Presenting.. the Beggar’s Chicken!
Brown, Glistening and smoking hot…
Another signature dish here is the reconstituted fish.. if done well, this dish truly rocks.
The skin of the fish is kept intact, while the flesh of the fish is removed, de-boned, ground up with chestnuts and other goodies, and then stuffed back into the fish skin.
The whole reconstituted fish is then re-fried. Our old “ah-mah chay” who use to work for us, use to cook this for us on a regular basis and it use to blow our socks off… It really requires skill, dedication and patient and steady hand!
This one though, tasted like a 5/10 because they ground up the fish flesh too fine and added too much flour, until it tasted like fish ball..
oh well.. at least it brought back fond memories.. ;D
This is the inside of our beggar’s chicken stuffed full with the Chinese herbs. The chicken flesh was infused with this herbal flavour.
This is a photo of all that was left of our meal. Not bad for just TWO persons, right? 😉

the zoo is pretty far.. got to get psyched to go.. haha
wow, in my youth, about 20 years ago, one had to travel all the way to the arse end of banting, near bukit jugra, to have such goodies. by the time you arrive back in KL you’re hungry again.
must be the same people, the genetically modified fish was their signature dish too.
we thoz the Beggar had become rich and now has started one of those swanky Old Street Chicken Kafes with wifi or something in some hypermarket near PandanIndah!
you din eat the double wishbone ah ? or take it home as a sentimental double-pin , for the balance ?
Such an impressive post of an obscure place … WELL DONE!!
aun:
If we r not mistaken bukit jugra only open for dinner. What’s more, too far. genetically engineered fish! lol.. so cute;D
bsg:

I have this craving for ‘begger’s chicken’.
BTW Bukit Jugra also serves at lunch time… but too far.
ARGH, i was looking for my comment, and realised i had commented when my kid’s gmail account was still opened, so i actually posted under his name! AUN!!! THAT’s ME, EFF BEE BEE!!!!
what did you wish for with that wishbone? hehehehe…
interesting find, this! 😀
I have heard a lot about this beggar’s chicken place. Now that you have tried it, do you think it’s worth all the journey and all the rave?
i din like it here leh. once they recommended the pig innards done beggar style… whole dish wasted cos they smell horrible (of the din properly cleaned innards). never returned after that time hahaha

mimi:

Tried beggar chicken twice in the much raved about restaurant in Ijok & didn't like it. So not too keen when heard of this place. But since you say good ..

tummythoz:
