Thirty8 @ Grand Hyatt KL

I love lazy Sunday afternoons at Thirty8, especially over their champagne brunch!

We’ve always been meaning to check out Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, every time we are in the KLCC area, but never got around to it. Somehow there’s some other activity on and we get sidetracked.

Well this time, we managed to get to Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur to check out the champagne brunch at Thirty8.

Stepping into the Grand Hyatt, you will notice how spacious, modern and elegant it looks. The place fells huge, and it is little wonder that it houses 370 guestrooms and 42 suites in total. Situated in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and right next to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the hotel is within walking distance to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, Suria KLCC, KLCC Park, Dewan Filharmonik Petronas as well as the Golden Triangle shopping and entertainment district. The Pavilion Shopping Centre, is less than ten minute walk away via the covered sky-bridge outside the hotel, so it really is a super strategic location for business men as well holiday makers alike.

When I asked around I found out that architects WATG, along with project architects GDP were responsible for the design. Gorgeous sweeping staircases reminded me of a modern version of those dramatic stairs in Gone With the Wind. The interiors designed by Bilkey Llinas Design, was trendy and had a very current look to it. The two main restaurants are Thirty8 and JP Teres.

Located on the 38th floor, as its name suggests, Thirty8 has a stunning 360-degree city view which will have you gasping in awe at what the eye can see. Sitting at the round table and facing the windows, you will be able to see the changes in weather (against the best backdrop ever in KL i.e. the Petronas Twin Towers), as the lunch progresses along. We had sunshine, followed by looming clouds, and then rain! It really sets the mood for dining I tell you and makes you just want to sit for ages, staring at nature in its full glory. There’s something about an overcast sky that’s just so moody and right for writing! I wish I could have brought my laptop there to do some work. OK, I shall stop gushing about the view now.

There is also a bar and a lounge area, and the design and layout of the restaurant makes you think “space” and “quality”. The highlight for me was the open kitchen where 3 – 4 chefs work the woks and toss food live, for the diners, who actually fell more like spectators, than diners. The highly energetic chefs in the open kitchen, offering a range of steaks, Chinese seafood, sushi and sashimi are a sight for sore eyes. Contrary to what one might think, the ventilation is good and you won’t feel nor smell smoky after dining here.

The bar and lounge areas are the perfect venues for pre and post-dinner drinks. While the bar is on the same level as the restaurant, the lounge is a relaxing yet elegant sitting area, adjacent to the Lobby on 38M. Though located on 38M, the lounge is part of Thirty8 and is accessible via the bubble lift or staircase by the bar. It is the elegant curves, captivating views, the dramatic sense of space and vibrant cuisine that makes Thirty8 the signature restaurant of the hotel.

Thirty8 serves buffet breakfast and ala carte lunch and dinner. The champagne brunch costs RM190++ without booze and RM360++ with booze. If you choose the boozy option, it will include free flow champagne, wines and cocktails which is a real steal.

During the champagne brunch, there’s something for the kids , as well as for the “kid in all of us”. Face painting, faux tattoo imprints (for adults too) and the coloring corner will keep your kiddos occupied as you enjoy a leisurely lunch.

One of the better champagne brunches in KL – we suggest you check it out one Sunday with the family if you are in KL.
