Living it up at Lavo

From the guys behind Chaze & Maze comes Lavo – lively contemporary dining that seems to be the buzz word around PJ folk these days.

I’ve heard over the grapevine that several oenophiles love this watering-hole for its extensive wine list, but little did I know, that the place serves a respectable list of modern Asian-Western dishes too.

And while the wine list goes on forever, so does the cocktail list.

Look out for Lavo specialty cocktails on the menu – booze geeks will like these ones which offer a change from run of the mill tipple.

Oh yes indeed. Safe to say, we diligently worked our way down the cocktail list that afternoon – Smoked Sweetness (RM29; Hennessy VSOP, red & green grapes, elderflower syrup, thyme, Peychaud’s Bitters), Kokomo Caipirinha (RM23; rum, malibu, strawberries, pineapples, house-made pandan syrup, molasses brown sugar), Lychee Longan Mojito (RM26; Sailor Jerry spiced rum, sour rhubarb liqueur, lychee & longan nectars), Watermelon Slammer (RM28; Smirnoff, Midori, Kwai Feh, watermelon) & Chilled XO-Tini (RM29; Patron XO Cafe, kahlua, espresso, roasted hazelnut syrup), to name a few.

All perfectly enjoyed as is, or even better, paired with food.

The Chicken fillets rolled in Crackly deep-fried Tofu, served with Thai chilli sauce (RM15) is incredibly addictive and I would order this with a bottle of wine and be happy for the evening.

Untitled

The Char Kuey Teow was interesting but call me a die-hard streetside CKT fan, because I found this dish just so-so(RM13).

Untitled

A defiantly springy spring chicken(RM30)., I’d opt for this instead of the CKT. Loved the succulent flesh paired with creamy buttery mash. Oh yum.

Untitled

A grilled rib-eye steak (RM49 for 220g),served medium rare with conventional sauces such as port wine, peppercorn, mushroom or garlic, was not particularly memorable. It was a good size though, with little fat, and definitely value for money.

Lavo’s duck breast pizza was toothsome and generously speckled with their home-smoked bird – Rocket leaves, mozzarella cheese & tomato sauce was a smorgasbord of delightful flavours for the win and priced only at RM24.

Untitled
Lavo’s pasta delivered in spades with this soft-shell crab number – the crustacean was huge, battered and deep-fried to perfection  (RM33).

We paired a red 2012’s Saint-Emilion Grand Cru by Château Tour des Combes rather nicely with our meal,  upon the sommelier’s fine recommendation.

Dessert was a colorful affair and a massive mix of flavours so I couldn’t tell you what I liked best – the butter cake layered with fruits & butterscotch sauce & vanilla ice cream (RM12), or the cloyingly sweet Gula Melaka pandan cheesecake (RM13) or even the chocolate brownie (RM15). Ah yes, one big sweet blur indeed.

All in all, a lovely afternoon over delicious wine and cocktails. Will have to be back for more dishes before we can safely pass judgement on the menu.
