Southern Bakery has only been around since 1961. Some will recognise its brand of bread and cakes sold at provision stores to your local roti man (in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur) making their rounds around the neighborhood in their scooter or the bicycle. Southern Bakery makes traditional chinese bread, cakes and biscuits in Kuala Lumpur. They don’t use yeast that has been passed down for hundreds of years, or a wood fired oven built by generations before. Their breads are not dense and as chewy as gourmet breads but they sure make them delicious and affordable.
And while their cakes are not their forte, their breads & biscuits are delicious. We have been frequenting their bakery for years, from the time they had their shop on Jalan Pasar, to their new premises now on Jalan Pudu, just a 10 minute walk away.
While some come here for the classic “chicken egg cake” in its distinctive teardrop shape, it is its kaya puff pastry which ‘takes the cake’ for us. Rich, dense, decadent, buttery flaky and not overly sweet. The few sesame seeds adds that little crunch and burst of earthy flavors.
They are one of the last few classic bakeries for old school chinese cakes, bread and biscuits in the country which has managed to retain its quality, yet keeping its prices attractive despite rising production costs.
There are several choices of buns available here from plain, red bean (anpan), kaya filled, butter filled but its kaya butter bun that is our favourite. Soft, chewy on top, sweet salty double layer filling of kaya and butter but a salty butter crispy bottom. A scrumptious snack indeed.
We usually go a little crazy and by a ton of biscuits when we frequent this place..
Not sure why it’s such a western sounding name.. hazard a guess? LOL
Don’t come here hungry, you might end up wanting to try everything..

Great to see an old-school bakery still thriving (and surviving) amidst all the new and trendy bakeries nowadays 🙂 Wonder how long before the roti man disappears from our heritage 🙁
