Movie Review: Gravity 3D 2013

Does the name, Alfonso Cuaron, ring any bells? This versatile Mexican director had directed films like  A Little Princess (1995), Y Tu Mamá También (2001), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and Children of Men (2006). Cuaron was also one of the producers of Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) directed by the other famous Mexican, Guillermo del Toro. If you’ve watched any of these award winning films and had enjoyed Cuaron’s work, then you would be looking forward to Warner Bros Pictures’ latest production, Gravity. If you haven’t watched any of those titles, well, you should. That is, if you are capable of sitting down for at least 90 minutes without fiddling with your smartphone. However, since you are reading this post. You’ve got good taste!

GRAVITY

If watching people mess around with tools turn you on, then you will like Gravity

So would a movie about a medical engineer lost and trapped in space be of interest to you? Would it sound boring to you if there were only 2 actors actually seen in the 90 minute? The others were only heard, but not seen. How about a movie devoid of nudity, sex talk, scantily clad young women (and hunks), fast cars, car chases, car explosions, gadgets, hip hop or dubstep music, bieber, miley, drugs, gun fights, fashion, and product placements?

Ok, this is closes to seeing a scantily clad woman albeit not a young one

Early reviews have been positive. The Verge mentions Gravity is a “visceral, mesmerizing adventure”. Forbe states it is a “breathtaking visual spectacle, yet deeply rooted in viewer empathy and character, offering not just incredible sights and sounds but a story worth telling. It is stirring, terrifying, jaw-dropping, and finally genuinely moving.” Variety proudly claims “at once classical and cutting-edge in its showmanship, placing the most advanced digital filmmaking techniques in service of material that could hardly feel more accessible” and then go on to mention it is a “tale of one woman’s expedition into the unknown is a nerve-shredding suspenser, a daring study in extreme isolation, and one of the most sophisticated and enveloping visions of space travel yet realized onscreen. It falls among that increasingly rare breed of popular entertainments capable of prompting genuine “How did they do that?” reactions from even the most jaded viewers, even as its central premise is so simple and immediately gripping that one might just as readily ask, “Why didn’t anyone do it sooner?” ”

Yes, you will be tethered like you tether someone elses data line

And what do I think about it? Well, I feel exactly the same as what the celebrated reviewers have mentioned. Gravity is one helluva entertaining movie! Gripping, suspenseful, dramatic and at times, humorous over an event that would creep anyone out, just thinking about it. It is a rollercoaster ride in the silence of space.

I would also agree with many of the positive reviewers that Gravity is probably the best science fiction, and one of the best movies of 2013. Sure I liked Star Trek Into Darkness but that’s just… well… Star Trek.

Gravity had been written by the director and his son, Jonas, and then brought to life with experienced actors George Clooney, Sandra Bullock and the voices of Ed Harris, Orto Ignatiussen, Phaldut Sharma, Amy Warren, and Basher Savage. The ‘viceral, mesmerizing’ and spellbinding visuals were commandeered by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and visual effects supervisor Tim Webber using the latest digital film making technology available and used (very) effectively. Technically, the film is near perfect. There is little to fault. Cuaron, Lubezki and Webber make an amazing team. They took a simple idea and just made a really good film.

I think I need tampons

Gravity is a movie you need to watch in a 3D IMAX screen. Your 90 inch at home will not do, and definitely not the Cam-ripped version!

Gravity will be orbiting cinema space starting 3 October 2013!
