Little Heritage House, at section 17 Petaling Jaya

Little Heritage House is one of the newest restaurants on that latest development of shop lots in section 17/56.

Inspired by the rich culture of Nyonya cuisine, Little Heritage House is nicely decorated with all the heirlooms characteristic of the straits chinese, from a bygone era. There is an upstairs area as well that’s perfect for intimate functions. Here you will see a fascinating glass display of old Nyonya footwear, jewelry, relics and paraphernalia.

A quick look at the menu and you will see that they serve all the traditional Nyonya ala carte favourites, but today, we decided on the Set Menu instead as we were pressed for time.

Priced at RM20 per head for the lunch and RM29 for the set dinner, you will be served an Acar appetizer, a Kiam Chai (salted vegetable) soup, a choice of Mains (mainly rice dishes) of either Nyonya Fried Rice, Chicken Rendang, Curry Chicken Rice, Saffron Fish or Sambal Petai and finally it ends with dessert. The set at Little Heritage House comes with a drink of chinese tea or chrysanthemum tea as well.

I had the Nyonya Fried Rice, and hubby had the Chicken Rendang. The soup starter of Kiam Chai, was spicy and sour and had a nice kick. It tasted like “choy-keok” and was really tasty. My Nyonya fried rice had been prepared by frying up baby shrimp (hae-bee) till fragrant and then frying that with sambal belacan and finally adding the rice to the pan and frying once more. The flavour was good, but it could have done with a little bit more rempah (fresh spices) – it lacked that Nyonya rempah kick that I look for in any good Nyonya dish. My dish came with acar, inchi cabin (nyonya fried chicken), a fried egg and keropok (fish or prawn cracker). Hubby’s rendang chicken was OK but again lacked that same rempah kick.

For dessert we had the sago melaka and the pulut hitam. Both came in freshly squeezed, thick coconut milk with just the right amount of sugar. Both were delicious, but could have done with just a pinch of salt, to elevate the flavours further we thought.

The Nyonya rojak was an add on, and not part of the set. We loved the fiery rojak hae-ko (shrimp paste) sauce that came with the fruits. Our tongues had a nice after burn from it.
