The Grand Finale of the 12th ( MIGF) Malaysia International Gourmet Festival at Sunway was a celebration we were glad we had not missed!
Held at Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach, guests were treated to an amazing array of hawker fare, exhilarating entertainment, and a high energy, almost carnival like atmosphere, as the night’s events unfolded.

Hundreds of guests attired in cool holiday beach wear, gathered at Sunway Lagoon’s Surf Beach at 7.30pm, where a tide of cocktails was served. With a constant supply of food, beers, wines, and even vodka cocktails, the guests made themselves comfortable, found a seat in front of the stage, and watched troupes of fire-eaters emerged and openly wolf-down flames, sparks and embers. Loads of photographers and videographers took pictures of the event, adding high glitz and glamour to the evening.
The hawker stalls included appetizers, mains and desserts, and featured Malaysian signature dishes of Rojak Pasembor, Mee Rebus and Yong Tau Foo.
And once the Guest of Honour arrived , acting Director-General of Tourism Malaysia, YBhg Dato’ Haji Azizan Noordin, the show began.

UK boy band The London Boys put on quiet a show.. and finally there was a cool video parody of 28 sporting MIGF Master Chefs busting moves to the hit everybody loves to hate (or hates to love) “Oppa Gangnam-style”, which I am sure many people will be talking about in the following weeks to come. Hilarious but thoroughly entertaining!

Then the highlight of the evening commenced and we all watched the presentation of 144 gold and silver MIGF chef statuettes to the deserving chef and restaurant teams who fared exceptionally well during the MIGF Festival. But the ultimate prize of the MIGF Golden Cauldron for Best All-round Restaurant was bagged by The Olive, whose charismatic chef, Australian Daniel Sheen, also snagged the Chef Congeniality title.

Also high in the esteem of gourmands were the 27 other participating restaurants. Like The Olive, several restaurants raked in multiple awards – among them, Cuisine Gourmet by Nathalie (Peoples’ Choice for Most Outstanding Cuisine at the Gala Launch; Judges’ Choice for Most Creative Festival Menu; Fine Cuisine Awards for Most Outstanding Starter) and Imperial Rama (Judges’ Choice for Most Creative Restaurant Station at the Gala Launch; Judges’ Choice for Best Marketed Restaurant; Festival Diners’ Awards for Most Outstanding Cuisine; and Fine Cuisine Awards Most Outstanding Appetiser.) Fellow MIGF winners in the 27 award categories included The Westin KL’s Five Sen5es, Qba and Prego; Makan Kitchen, L’Heritage, The Pomelo, West Lake Garden, Dynasty, Grill 582 and New Orleans Bar & Grill. A special, cherry-on-top achievement was attained by The Sunway Group upon being awarded the prestigious Outstanding Festival Achievement Award.
Then the Alma Latina’s Band took over, and the audience figuratively kicked off their shoes, let their hair down and started to salsa the night away. Best percussions, music and entertainment I’ve seen in a long time!

With the last winning chef being bestowed a miniature, gold-plated version of himself, the MIGF Organising Chairman Dato’ Steve Day tipped his panama hat to the participating MIGF restaurants for making the MIGF Festival a success. We are definitely looking forward to more amazing menu’s in 2013!
