Hokkaido Santouka Ramen

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, one of KL’s biggest shopping centers has officially opened its doors to its newest iconic precinct and tourist destination called, Tokyo Street. Situated on Level 6, Tokyo Street is a themed precinct alongside Centre Court, Connection, Couture Pavilion, Gourmet Emporium and Seventh Heaven. This place offers shoppers a 360-degree retail experience with a vibrant mix of Japanese F&B, retail and service brands. Toyko Street is inspired by Asakusa (a district in Japan that possesses both a traditional, as well as urban cosmopolitan feel), and it reminds me of the ever changing consumer fashion trends and lifestyle in Tokyo. This space is definitely dedicated to Japan’s high fashion, gourmet cuisine and cutting edge home ware. If I didn’t know any better, I would say I just landed on the streets of Tokyo.

Anyway, here we are, at the pre-launch of Hokkaido Santouka Ramen – one of the eateries located within Tokyo street. This place specialises in Ramen. The Shio broth is good enough—smooth with a mellow roundness, subtly flavored with a salt and chicken stock, resulting in a soup that’s tangy, salty, and savory yet still fairly light on the palate, topped off with a pickled plum. The noodles are firm and springy, cooked al dente. The fresh grilled pork floating in the broth is succulent, as are the bamboo shoots and the chopped scallions. Some of the non-ramen must-have dishes include the pork cheek(jowl) charshu, the deep fried chicken and the gyoza.

  • how much weight must i lose before i come back to KL! theres so many exciting things going on!

  • Sean says:

i only managed to try the shio ramen and the miso ramen, but i really enjoyed both of them. real comfort food! unfortunately, the pork cheeks were not available on the night i went there, so i’ve got to return soon to try them! 😀

wow… i would really love to try this outlet!

  • Kelvin says:

Tried this yesterday. They had a limited menu of only 4 ramen choices and nothing else available. Even so, there was a queue.

While the noodles were competent, they kinda underwhelmed. And there was a hint of alkaline left in the noodles that lingered as an unpleasant aftertaste.

And at RM25-27 a pop (with only chashu, narutomaki and shinachiku as well as sparse garnishings), a tad overpriced especially when one could get really good freshly pulled La Mian at the foodcourt downstairs with white radish and dumplings for RM10 (ask for the chili oil!!).

    • cumi&ciki says:

on the pricey side, I have to agree. 4 types of ramen – I don’t know what you were expecting but aren’t those the main types in a typical Japanese ramen shop.

      • Kelvin says:

to reiterate, the 4 types of ramen were all they had. nothing else on menu. not even sides or drinks choices… only plain ice water.

Hey what’s your take on the rest of Tokyo St? I’m curious to see if it’s just a line-up of Japanese concepts or there will actually be a mix of street food, or even those crazy vending machines!!

    • cumi&ciki says:

Hi Min! It looked 50% completed at the time, so I could not say. But, yeah, it does look a little conservative at the moment.. not wacky enough by half..

  • Wen Ching says:

How was the spicy ramen? Was it spicy? It looks so good, I want to try it out! And Tokyo Street is finally open! I’m definitely visiting it when I’m back! Can’t wait, so excited about it!

  • Isaac Tan says:
