il Lido

Singapore’s polished Italian restaurant, il Lido, which has been doing a brisk business since it opened in June 2010, in the Yap Kwan Seng neighbourhood, feels like a very familiar kind of place. And it should. We have been coming here regularly for close to a year now and the place still looks as swanky as ever.

“I guess the recession really is over,” mutters one of the diners at our table as we surveyed the selection of pastas, which seemed to grow more elaborate and accomplished (and pricey) each time we drop by for dinner. Ah but wait. Before you strike this place off, as one of the unaffordable joints, let me say that il Lido’s new family set will surprise you. Inspired by the traditional Italian festive feasts, ilLido KL is launching the ‘Family’ Set Menu (RM148 per person), a sumptuous, all-Italian spread that is perfect for sharing amongst friends and families. Lyla Lin of il Lido invited us down for dinner one night and just check out the spread.

The family set starts with a generous selection of 5 antipasti, such as buffalo mozzarella cheese, made by Chef Michael Bruschi who lives in Langkawi, deep-fried calamari, eggplant parmagiana , parma ham with shavings of sweet melon and tomato stuffed with crab and tuna tartare. Moving on to the family set mains, you will be served a variety of garganelli fava pasta (looks like penne), potato gnocchi with crab and white wine, crispy codfish with mash potatoes, tomato and basil sauce and grilled beef sirloin topped with rucola and parmigiano cheese. The garganelli pasta in fava bean cream and smoked mozzarella was fantastic. This was my favourite dish that night.. truly a must try!

If you do not have a large family to take to il Lido, don’t worry, you can also do the whole romantic date thing, with just a special someone. Some of the other newer items on the ala carte menu include the stuffed quail with goose liver served with a super fragrant roasted carrot (highly recommended), a homemade spaghetti with cod, artichokes and mint and also a seafood casserole served in a rich lobster broth.

After all that, we almost could not fit in dessert, that consisted of a dense, smooth pannacotta, a hot chocolate lava cake and a gorgeous Tiramisu.
