DUCK
GOOSE
Wow! I knew a couple of those points but definitely not all of them. (My days of reading the Britannica are long gone la:P)

Anyway, it’s funny that just by looking at the diet of the Duck vs. the Goose, you can see why the flesh of the goose should taste better and be superior to that of the duck, no? I mean, the Duck eats the rubbish it swims in.. and the goose feeds on posh, plump grain. No contest.

Anyway.. the answer to the yesterday’s blog question is :
(A) is DUCK and (B) is GOOSE.

To test out our theory on the taste of one vs. the other.. we decided to venture into Pudu..
Goose Mecca.

The signs are everywhere..

Duck, Goose.. all living merrily down the same street. Chen Chen BBQ – Read what J2KFM said about the goose.

On the extreme corner end, facing the main-road there is also the famous Beijing Goose place Soon Fatt blogged about by KY SPEAKS. That groovy shack on the road is not appealing to me today as it is blisteringly HOT.

Wei Kee it is then.. shady, cool and near where we found a park.

Look familiar? This is photo- (B)The Goose!

Another profile, (And I could not use this photo because it would give the answer away!) shows you just how solid the meat is and how well fried that plump skin layer is!

So verdict? Well, however good the Goose tastes, let me just say that the price of the bird erased the warm, happy, after-glow, faster than you can say “What the duck?!”

RM40 for quarter of a bird… HOLY GOOSE! I start to get a little nervous. Eventhough the Goose was yummy, I think blindfolded, I would not be able to tell it apart from the insect ingesting Duck. When we asked how much for a quarter duck the answer was RM15.

RM15! FIFTEEN !! 2.6666 times more than the duck.

Erm, why so expensive you ask? We asked the nice lady director, Ms Yong and she said:
1. Imported from China (apparently the new shipment comes in today so we were lucky to get the tail end of the goose stock. Not so lucky in terms of freshness)
2. Feed is expensive (kindly refer to my top two photos on Duck vs. Goose)
3.Transport/packaging/handling etc. etc..

Call me a PLEBEIAN but I think after this, I will probably opt for the 2.6666 X portion of duck in future. I’ll be richer, fuller .. and seeing as my ability to recall a food experience is fading faster these days, … none the wiser!

What do you think.. Will you still choose the Goose over the Duck? (despite the economic depression ..?!)

RM40 for 1/4 goose?? I’ll stick to duck! Top up another RM10 can get one whole duck…eat until full. =P

  • Precious Pea says:

Wahh…look at those goose meat!! So expensive and 1/4 portion is barely enough for me. Duck or goose…both also i love!! Errr…a bit disturbed with the cute ducky pic you put up but then again, i still heart duck. SLURPS!!!!

  • 550ml jar of faith says:

Yay yay! I got it right for the first time! Score!! I don’t know if I’d go for the premium goose or duck though.. after seeing the cute pics of both, I think I might retire from duck/goose consumption!

  • boo_licious says:

Now I’m craving some goosey action. Yeah, the price is definitely a big no but once in a while, I don’t mind. Too bad, the ones we rear here are just not up to std, hence we need to use frozen imported goose.

  • J2Kfm says:

and I thought goose in HK is expensive, about RM150 for a whole bird if I'm not wrong.

but even at Chen Chen also nearly the same price!! faint.

pinching myself endlessly for missing HK's Yung Kee's legendary goose, at probably >>2.66666X of duck's price tag.

    what a hilarious post.
GEESE! what a honker! are they imported live, or dead? that’s blardy exp. i think if you weigh the meat, it might be equivalent to eating wagyu leh. does it come with a diseased liver, that you can pan sear?

  • fatboybakes says:

oh ya, how DOES it compare with yung kee? that’s the only place i’ve had it i think….

  • Tummythoz says:

A good Roasted duck will do for me. Mainly because once plated, I cannot differentiate the taste between both birds.
    =P

  • vkeong says:

yeah Goose is much more expensive than duck.. I only knew this when 8tv’s HoChak went to feature another roasted goose stall. but I think it’s worth trying rite 😀
