Mr. Peabody and Sherman (2014)

DreamWorks Animation have done it again. They have given us yet another treat. A wonderful feature length animation that will surely amaze young children and the kid in all of us older ones. Mr. Peabody and Sherman is an expansion of a segment found in the 50-60s immensely popular variety cartoon show, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

It won’t ring-a-bell to any Gen-Y’s mind, but previous generations growing up on American cartoons would surely be familiar with the show and many of the cartoon characters created by Jay Ward and Alex Anderson.

The movie retells the story of Mr. Peabody, a talking canine with super intelligence, his adopted human son, Sherman, and their time machine, WABAC (Way back). Sherman inadvertently takes Penny, a brat, on the WABAC back to time which leads to a bunch of  misadventures and a catastrophe in the time-space continuum. Mr. Peabody must then quickly come to the rescue to save his son, Penny and the world.

Ty Burrell (Modern Family) plays the eccentric Mr. Peabody, Max Charles as young Sherman and Ariel Winter (Modern Family) as spoilt brat Penny. All great actors that pull off their roles spectacularly.

Keeping to Dreamworks formula, this is a superb family animated movie with good story telling with lessons on life, western history and morals, wonderful music, and lots of quirky humor. Famous historical figures and events are introduced in outrageously humorous scenes. Even Peabody and Sherman are acquainted with all of the historical icons on first names basis through past travels with the WABAC. It is an animation with heart and mind – never a moment of boredom.  Can a dog be a parent? It is a question best answered after you have watched Mr.Peabody and Sherman. Which begs the question – why shouldn’t you watch it?
