KL Restaurant Week (KLRW) 2013 @ Kin No Mizu & Brotzeit

So what and when is KL Restaurant Week (KLRW) 2013 exactly ?

If you haven’t already heard, The KL Restaurant Week is set to take place from the 4th – 11th of October, with nearly 50 of the city’s top restaurants participating in a week long gastronomy event. It’s all about the convenience of booking online, and then going to your restaurant of choice, to enjoy some of the creative yet affordable items on the menu, for the period of one week. Here are the list of participating restaurants, so if you see a restaurant you’ve been dying to check out, but have not had the time to visit, now is your chance to book it online.

The way the KL Restaurant Week works is simple. From now till the 29th September 2013, go online and book your restaurant of choice via the website. Each restaurant has set aside a limited number of seats offering their Restaurant Week menus, and will operate on a first-come-first-served basis. Reservations can only be made online via www.klrestaurantweek.com. A booking fee of RM 2 per seat applies. Direct reservations to the restaurants will not be possible.

Almost 50 restaurants will offer special lunch and dinner menus during the week. Starting from RM20 nett (for a two-course lunch) and RM50 nett (for a 3-course dinner), these often feature the restaurants’ signature or new dishes. Once the booking period is over, that’s it. The restaurant week will then commence from the 4th – 11th October and that’s when you get to enjoy the meals at the restaurants you have booked.

Easy peasy, no?

Anyway, here are two restaurants we checked out (Kin No Mizu & Brotzeit), which were on The KL Restaurant Week list, and the food was good. Of course there are many more on that list, but we need to find more time to visit them all!

Kin No Mizu , The Intermark KL

If you’re wondering why the name Kin No Mizu sounds familiar, it’s because it is the sister restaurant to Mizu in Bangsar Village. The food is rather satisfying and the service prompt. The restaurant is tucked away on the 2nd floor of the Intermark KL, so it might take some finding. Stepping into the restaurant, we find the classy, contemporary set up a welcoming change to the raging traffic on the main road below.

For the set lunch at Kin No Mizu (and also Mizu), check out the 2-course meal that’s super affordable, priced at RM20nett, for an Appetizer of Avocado and Tuna Salad followed by a Main Course of Kitsune Udon with Mini Gyudon (Japanese Inaniwa Noodle in soup, topped with simmered, deep-fried bean curd and mini-sized beef rice bowl).

And for dinner, adding on one more dish will give you a 3-course meal, priced at RM50nett. The first course was served – a chilled dish of Salmon Carpaccio and Roasted Wild Duck. Followed by the 2nd course of Braised Ox Cheek Meat with a specially blended sauce and the finally and third course, the all essential carbo course – the Kitsune Udon! Or alternatively go for the Nigiri Sushi served with Miso Soup if you prefer rice to noodles.

Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant , Mid Valley

Brotzeit is no stranger to PJ and KL folk, and they have already built for themselves, quite a reputation of serving great German nosh. You will normally find the restaurant packed to the rafters, filled with folks chugging down German ale whilst munching hearty finger food. Later, the families move in and diners fill the space – tables heave with the weight of pork knuckles, bockwurst, spatzle and more beer mugs. Life is good at Brotzeit.

And at this German Gastro Restaurant & Bier Bar, you might choose between a 2-course, lunch meal priced at RM20nett, that consists of a Soup of the and a Main Course (7 dishes to choose from): We had the Bavarian Meat Balls on Spatzle (Juicy and tender pork meatballs in tomato sauce served on a bed of buttered spatzle) or the Smoked Salmon & Salad with Fries (Smoked Salmon on a bed of salad served on Laugen bread with fries).

And for the dinner menu, there were some good old fashioned hearty favourites to choose from..

For Dinner, the 3-course meal priced at RM50nett consists of the Soup of the Day, One Main Course (6 dishes to choose from) – All schnitzel and cordon bleu varieties are served with one side dish of potato salad, mashed or roasted potatoes, fries, wedges or sauerkraut.

Out of these, we had the Jägerschnitzel (Grilled escalope of pork served with mushroom sauce & topped with bacon) or the Bauern Cordon.

We also had Dessert, 2 types to choose form. Either the Bavarian Trifle (Refreshing layers of orange & triple sec of rum infused sponge fingers & fresh cream) or the Bayrische Cream (Bavarian vanilla crème with chocolate sauce & slivered toasted almonds). Both were incredibly satisfying!

Bauern Cordon

I like the Bauern Cordon at Brotzeit because it is served the traditional way – with German potato salad (nice sour tang due to the vinegar), peach, cranberry and a lemon wedge on the side.

Stuff filleted pork loin with cheese, wrap with sliced bacon, mushrooms, breaded and fried. Delicious.

Jägerschnitzel

Totally loved the creamy mushroom sauce served over a thin, tender pork cutlet. I’ve tried several other variations before, like with bacon and red wine, but my favorite is still this sauce of sautéed mushrooms with white wine and cream.
