Songkran @ Erawan

I’m glad I was not in Thailand for Songkran.

Armed with water guns, the weekend of Songkran, is a great excuse Thai folks to shoot girls and boys and tourists alike with water. Of course, the boys, girls and tourists shoot back. Needless to say, this is the country’s most popular festival, which runs every year around April 13 to 15.

For us, Songkran at Erawan is a classy affair, devoid of chaotic water fights and nonstop partying. Of course, we still celebrate (but in a much more low key way), Songkran, which in Sanskrit means the entry of the sun into any sign of the Zodiac. This festival is, in fact, the celebration of the vernal equinox similar to those of the Indian Holi Festival, the Chinese Ching Ming, and the Christian Festival of Easter.

The water festival is about cleaning, purification, and fresh starts. Houses are cleaned, Buddha statues are gently washed with scented water, and elders are honored by pouring water respectfully over their hands.

It is also a time of feasting. And here at Erawan, Chef Korn prepares a feast like no other. His amazingly fine workmanship can be seen in the decorations around the restaurant, as it can be seen in his canapés, and thai entrees. It is a joy to gaze upon and to partake in his fine Thai cuisine, and to remember this day of exuberant celebration, Songkran.
