Celebrating Chinese New Year @ Five Sen5es, The Westin KL

I’ve always liked Five Sen5es, at one of the best Kuala Lumpur hotels, the Westin KL, because the place is so darn chic.

It just oozes class, and the food is awesome too. I also like the fact that when you dine there, you are supposed to use all your 5 senses – sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. I couldn’t wait to see what their Chinese New Year Menu looked like.

Yes indeed, Chinese New Year is a little like Thanksgiving where there’s celebration, massive feasting, visiting relatives and where ornate, wildly colored dragons, kamquat trees, and generally, decorations that are “red” in colour, are used to decorate the place for good luck. Chinese restaurants will inadvertently be serving up dishes with names that mean “good luck” and “fortune”.

Tossing the Yee Sang.. the higher the better!

And this Year of the Snake is no exception either. Yee Sang is of course the highlight of the Chinese New Year dinner, and a variety of other fine dishes will soon follow suit.

Sometimes more of the yee sang ends up on the table rather than in the dish. That’s ok, it just means that you are really good at Lo Hei (tossing the Yee Sang) and well on your way to increased prosperity, abundance and vigor. The bigger the mess on the table, the better.

That’s right, part of the fun and madness of Yee Sang ritual is actually the noise and merry making that involves large chopsticks and people tossing and mixing the ingredients in the large, flat plate till the colors and raw fish are completely and thoroughly mixed. This is the one time, parents will not scold their children for playing with their food. In fact, the more you play with it and toss it, the better. Also, the louder you scream prosperity wishes the better. “Health Come!” “Money Come!” “Love and Good Fortune COME! “

So what happens if you’re not really into the raw fish that comes with the Yee Sang? Well at Five Sen5es the ‘Lou Sang’ offers a variety of Yee Sang, from Norwegian Fresh Salmon Yee Sang, Australian Spring Abalone Yee Sang to the Golden Boston Lobster Yee Sang.

Nian Gao served with fruit salad and fresh coconut shavings

It is considered good luck to eat nian gao during this time, because “nian gao” is a homonym for “higher year” or upward progression.
