Mad about Mooncakes @ Toh Yuen, PJ Hilton

One of the nicest places to go for mooncakes, or to buy some home for a party is at, or from, Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant of Hilton Petaling Jaya. Their new range of snow skin flavoured mooncakes are to die for. If you are a fan, you should check out their snowskin selections and premium baked mooncakes, sold between the 1st August till the 30th September 2012. These handcrafted mooncakes are elegantly packaged with an oriental theme– red and black, turquoise and green. They make ideal gifts for business associates, friends and family.

Falling on the 15th day of the 8th month according to Chinese lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the second grandest festival after the Spring Festival in China. In the Western calendar, this festival normally falls between the 2nd week of September and the 2nd week of October.

This festival is believed to have originated from the ancient ceremony of Sacrificing to the Moon Goddess for the year’s end harvest. This is when families return to celebrate and give thanks for the year’s bounty. Offerings of their harvest such as apples, pears, peaches, grapes, pomegranates, melons, oranges and pomelos were common. Other offerings cooked, baked etc included moon cakes, cooked taro, and water caltrope, a type of water chestnut resembling black buffalo horns. And of course, ‘tang yuen’ made from glutinous rice. ‘Yuen’ means ’round’ which symbolize “completeness”, thus, it means unity and harmony within the family.

Today, the Mooncake festival just means a chance to savour these extremely creative and sweet cakes and to send them to relatives, families, bosses, customers, friends etc as gifts to show you care, or to show you’re the smarty pants who knows where to get cool things from! At Toh Yuen PJ Hilton, Master Chef Lee introduces an array of creative snowskin selections with pillowy skin, velvety fillings and intriguing flavours.

While the Snowskin Mooncakes with Lotus Paste and Sunflower Seeds is deliciously smooth and melts in your mouth, the Snowskin Mooncake with Green Tea and Cheese Cake and Snowskin Mooncakes with Pumpkin and Pandan consist of varied tastes which are all part of the modern flavours of mooncakes these days. If it ain’t unusual, many might not even give them a second look! We are so spoilt for choice these days..

And if you like fruits, wrap your tongue around the Snowskin Mooncake with Red Bean Paste and Banana and Snowskin Mooncake with Yam Paste and Strawberry. Finally, I am not a fan but I hear that the Snowskin Mooncake with Durian is pretty darn good – it features the luscious, stinky, durian pulp without overwhelming on the palate.
As impressive as its marvelous snowskin mooncakes might be, not all fancy the texture of these modern mooncakes. As such, you can choose to have the golden baked mooncakes instead. Choose from the White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk, the Lotus Paste with Double Yolks, the Green Tea Paste with Single Yolk, the Red Bean Paste with Sunflower Seeds, the Pandan Paste with Single Yolk, or the Assorted Nuts.

The snowskin mooncakes are priced at RM13+ each, while baked mooncakes are RM22+. You are given a 10% discount on bulk purchase of 100 boxes of mooncake and above. Not bad at all if you do the math!
