Off to the Great Barrier Reef, with Problogger and Tourism Queensland

Hi folks! I’m off to Cairns to kick start my Great Barrier Reef adventures, along with Problogger and Tourism Queensland.

On this trip, there will be deep sea diving, (I was hoping that I might get to dive in a cage and rub noses with the great white.. er wishful thinking!) and some thrills and spills such as a White Water Rafting adventure on the Barron River, compliments of Raging Thunder and riding Poseidon, a 24-metre custom built catamaran, which will take us to the edge of the Great Barrier Reef in just over one hour, for some amazing diving, compliments of Poseidon Cruises. We will also have workshops with Darren Rowse (@problogger) and am I totally psyched to hear from the man himself, about what he thinks of my blog (gulp!)

But folks, that’s just the tip of the Iceberg.. or should I say the tip of the Reef!

Anyway, for a cool account on what happens, follow my adventures via Twitter @agentcikay hastag #Qldblog; @Queensland, and will be updating Facebook too at CCFoodTravel! See ya’ll soon..

About the Reef..

It is located in the Coral Sea, off the Queensland coast in northeast Australia, and reaching north almost to Papua New Guinea. But with over 2,900 individual reefs, 900 islands, an area of 133,000 square miles, and stretching for 1,600 miles, it can hardly be said to be in one place.

The reef can be seen from space is and is the world’s largest single structure made from living organisms. It is thought a reef originated here 600,000 years ago (some say 18 million years ago), but the present reef (which grew on older reefs) probably dates back around 20,000 years. It supports, among other things, 1,500 species of fish, 400 corals, 4,000 types of mollusc, 1,500 different sponges, 200 bird species and 500 varieties of seaweed. Around two million people visit the reef annually. It’s my turn this coming week;)
