Cubes Chinese Restaurant @ Jaya One, PJ

We just found a new place to Oo.. and Ah.. over just this week, thanks to Eiling, who is a good friend of the owner of Cubes. We also had great fun with the entourage, Yiling, KY and HB – good to meet you! I use to think that Cubes Chinese restaurant was rather over shadowed by all the noise and fanfare going on downstairs of Jaya One , that I never really had the chance to step into this groovy joint. Do not be fooled by this restaurants swanky contemporary deco, they really know how to serve up great authentic chinese cuisine, thanks to the dynamic owners  (husband and wife team) , Mr. and Mrs. Ang. Throughout the course of the night, we found our host and dinner companion, Mr. Ang, a highly experienced and entertaining guy and he amused us endlessly with his anecdotal stories, all night long.

To say that we overate would be the understatement of the century. There was aromatic London duck, which was essentially shredded duck, wrapped in a gorgeous egg crepe and garnished with cucumber, spring onion and ‘special sauce’ to taste. Some places get the duck too dry but Cubes did it just right. A fantastic signature dish and not to be missed.

After the duck, the soft shell crab. Not just any soft shell crab – but sesame battered soft shell crab eaten in a ‘mantou’ (dumpling) and garnished with pineapple and salad leaves and ‘special sauce’. (You will see this term ‘special sauce’ mentioned a lot, throughout the course of the dinner – trade secret! ).

I forgot to mention that we also had some rather interesting drinks at Cubes. The bright pink and green drinks are actually vegetable juices that are really the perfect ‘pick me up’ antioxidants that one should take before or after the gym. Heck, you can take it anytime really, because it is so good for the body, and it tastes delicious. Soon we entered what I call, the ‘pork phase’  of the dinner – a true pork experience of a life time. Pork rib, braised pork and pork knuckle.. non stop eating. All I can say is that each pork dish, topped the other.  Each had their own unique and distinctive taste. Halfway through dinner Mr. Ang brought out the Macallan.. what a host!  The roast chicken was good, but it paled in comparison with the pork counterparts.

“Let there be pork”. Gorgeous, fall-off-the-bone ribs. I swear I died and went to heaven. Wash this down with the Macallan single malt and know that this world is a better place for it;)

If you think that concluded our dinner, think again. We also had double boiled herbal soup, and Massive Tiger prawns in some special magnificent garlic seasoning that really knocked our socks off.

Ok, so this final one is the only’ light’ dish we had the whole night. Deep fried lotus root and vegetables. Oh yes, and after this , dessert of black sesame glutinous balls a colorful platter of fresh fruits! (sorry, the glutinous balls were dessert with my boss and clients the night before.. yikes.. as you can tell, I’ve been entertaining way too often!)

That concludes a really excellent night out. Eiling and Mr. Ang, thank you for the invite and see you guys soon:)
